Volleyball Player Named Player of the Week


PHSC’s Melina Staengle is this week's NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week. Staengle, a sophomore from Sindelfingen, Germany, averaged 3.8 digs per set and 0.4 blocks per set over two matches, helping the Quistas to 3-1 wins over Indian River State and St. Petersburg. Staengle recorded double-double digs in each match, including 17 against St. Petersburg.

Quistas' Battle with Santa Fe Ends in Loss


In front of a crowd of over 800 fans last night, the PHSC Conquistadors battled a well fought five-set thriller losing to Santa Fe College to bring their record to 2-1. The team was lead by Melina Staengle who had double-double figures recording 16 kills and 20 digs, Logan Miller 10 kills, Jordan Bickett 9 kills with hitting efficiency of .438 and Teddi Wright with 49 assists.

The Conquistador's opened with a 23-25 loss in the first set, came back to win the second set 25-23, lost the third 16-25. They bounced back in the fourth 26-24, and finished with a loss in the fifth 8-15. An archive of the match can be seen at

Volleyball Qualifies for Team Academic Award


The women's volleyball team qualified for the NJCAA All Academic Team Award with a 3.31 team GPA. The minimum GPA to qualify is a 3.0. The team ranked 41 out of 97 qualifying teams.

And, special recognition is given to Jessi Shapiro who qualified for an individual academic award—the NJCAA Exemplary Academic Achievement Award. Athletes must have completed three full-time semesters and must have an overall GPA between a 3.60 and 3.76 to qualify. 

Lady Quistas go 4-0 at the Conquistador Invitational Tournament


The Lady Quistas hosted a ten-team tournament over the weekend which included four out of state teams, five teams from Florida, three teams from North Carolina and one from Kansas. PHSC went 4-0 defeating No. 15 Catawba Valley Community College (N.C.), Clearwater Christian College, Eastern Florida State College, and No. 17 Cape Fear Community College (N.C.).

The Quistas were lead by sophomore right side Logan Miller who posted 44 kills, averaging 2.93 kills per set. Also leading was sophomore outside/middle, Jordan Bickett who recorded 32 kills, .291 hitting efficiency, 43 digs and 9 blocks. Teddi Wright lead the team in assists with 175 for the tournament, averaging 11.66 per set.

Logan Miller and Jordan Bickett were selected to the Conquistador Invitational All Tournament Team.

This week the team with play at home against State College of Florida on Tuesday at 7 p.m., Santa Fe College on Thursday at 7 p.m., and on Friday they will travel to Avon Park for a tri-match with South Florida State College and Palm Beach State College.
