Women's Cross Country

PHCC cross-country team

The 2013 season looks like it should be an exciting year with three time All American Samantha Greenlee returning to lead the way. Also returning is sophomore Ariel Grey who should be in the top five again this year. Some incoming freshman that should have a huge impact are: Melody Yero from Belleview High School, Kristen Dunlap from Crystal River and Samantha Martinez from Ridgewood High School in New Port Richey.

With this year’s roster including more than 16 athletes, the team has high expectations of breaking into the top 10 at the Cross Country 5k National Meet in November at Iowa Central Community College. The following weekend, Greenlee, Yero and sophomore Judtih Young will represent PHSC in the half marathon national race hosted by Chattahoochee Technical College in Georgia.

Run with the Quistas a Success

The ninth annual Run with the Quistas was a huge success. With the help of the volleyball, baseball, faculty and students we had a great turnout for volunteers and runners. Jeremy Richardson, 24, of Palm Harbor, won the race. He had a winning time of 17:47.  PHCC sophomore, Samantha Greenlee, PHCC cross-country team, won the women's division in 19:53.

This year, any runner that beat all members of the PHCC cross-country team won a key chain. Jason Wetherington and Kim Whitney were the faculty division winners.

With over 130 registered runners and 112 completing the 5k it was one of the best year’s for attendance even with the early morning rain shower. The weather was not the most ideal but everyone survived and had a great time.

Awards were given for the first three places in each five-year age group starting at 9 and under. The kid’s run was a free event for all kids that included a free goodie bag.

Cross Country Competes at Walt Disney World

This past weekend the Lady Quistas finally were able to race against some junior colleges at the Walt Disney World Invitational. The team ran against fifth ranked Cuyahoga Community College (Ohio) and Chipola College. Chipola is the only other women’s junior college program in the state of Florida.

The weather was perfect for the 5k race and the ladies performed well. Samantha Greenlee is back in top form finishing first for the team in 19:53.  Sophomore Ariel Grey followed her in 20:48 and freshman Melody Yero finishing in 21:01. Rounding out the scoring for the team was Katie Monds 21:27 and Sammi Martinez 22:01. The team finished 11th just behind Cuyahoga (tenth).  Chipola finished 18th among the 24 full teams and 200 runners. This should help the ladies 19th place ranking from last week.

Cross Country team sets personal bests in Charlotte

The women’s cross country team’s summer training paid off as they competed in Charlotte this past weekend where racing temperatures were in the 60s and not a cloud in the sky. Every Quista that competed set a personal best on the 6k course that included a hill with a very steep descent. Leading the way was sophomore Samantha Greenlee with a time of 24:00. This bests her last year 6k times as well as the University of Florida 6k time. Next up for the Quistas were Ariel Grey (24:42) and Melody Yero (24:44) pushing each other all the way through the line. Freshman Katie Monds had a superb race finishing in 25:24. Rounding out the scoring was Sammi Martinez with a 25:47. Only one minute and 47 seconds separated the first through fifth runners. The Quistas sixth and seventh runners were not far behind with Judith Young finishing in 25:50 and freshman Kristen Dunlap in 25:57. This helped the team place 23 among 30 very competitive teams including winners Mississippi State, Davidson, Florida State University and Miami.

This coming weekend is the team’s bye week. Next up for the ladies is the Disney Cross Country meet on October 12 followed by our ninth annual Run with the Quistas 5k on October 20. Please visit our race news page for more information. Earlybird registration ends October 15.
