PHCC wins spot in state Brain Bowl tournament

Pasco-Hernando Community College’s Brain Bowl Alpha team placed second in the Regional Brain Bowl Tournament on February 9 at South Florida State College. As a result, PHCC’s team will advance to the 2013 State Brain Bowl tournament, March 14-16, 2013 at Florida Gateway College, Lake City. This is the sixth consecutive year that PHCC will send a team to the state tournament.

“We have a dedicated group of students who make up PHCC’s two Brain Bowl teams; its always exciting to see any of our teams move on to regionals,” said Eric Wolters, PHCC Brain Bowl Team coach and assistant professor in history.  The PHCC brain bowl team-A took second place in the regional competition with a record of 4-1, following first-place finishers Valencia College. The first and second place teams are eligible to participate in the state tournament. PHCC team members for the regional tournament include: team captain John Brock, Dan Barber, Bruce Braun and Neatia D’addio.

Also, three of the competition top 10 finishers include PHCC students: Bruce Braun (third place); John Brock (fourth place) and James Hanneman (10th place). 

Brain Bowl is a game of general knowledge and quick recall where students compete as a team against other community college teams. It is an academic competition that allows students to demonstrate a broad range of knowledge in various subject areas including natural science, social science, math and humanities.
