The Pasco-Hernando Community College women’s softball team held a batting and fielding clinic for the Dixie West Pasco Girl’s Fastpitch Softball Association on Saturday, February 9, 2013. Nearly 70 ballplayers, ranging in age from 6 to 17 years, participated in the annual event at the Oak Ridge Park ball fields on Seven Springs Blvd., in New Port Richey from 10 a.m. to noon.
“We are excited to do this clinic every year. The girls are receptive to learning and it’s especially good to teach some of the basic fundamentals at this young age,” said Tom Ryan, PHCC Head Softball Coach.
PHCC women’s softball players and coaching staff teach the Dixie players proper batting stance and hitting techniques, where to focus from inside the box in order to hit, mitt placement when catching a grounder or a fly ball and proper form for pitchers. “We hope the girls learn something from us that they can put into practice when their season starts on March 2,” said Ryan.
“We also talk to the players about good sportsmanship with an emphasis on positive attitude and the importance of a focused effort from all team members,” said Ryan.
