"History of African Americans in Opera" Scheduled for PHSC's Black History Month Events

JoAnne Stephenson, Ph.D., a University of Central Florida professor, has been selected as the keynote speaker for Pasco Hernando State College’s 2014 Black History Month program. Stephenson’s presentation “History of African-Americans in Opera” offers the audience a performance of select classical compositions by African-Americans.

Four presentations are scheduled over a two-day period:

Wednesday, February 19

  • 10 a.m. - Room B-105, Spring Hill Campus, 450 Beverly Court
  • 1 p.m. – Room B-104/105, North Campus, Brooksville, 11415 Ponce de Leon Blvd.

Thursday, February 20

  • 10 a.m. – Room R-151, West Campus, New Port Richey, 10230 Ridge Road
  • 1 p.m. –Room A-240, East Campus, Dade City, 36727 Blanton Road

PHSC’s Black History Month program includes other presentations, activities and exhibitions. David H. Jackson, Jr., Ph.D., offers "Booker T. Washington Tour of Florida: March 1912" on Wednesday, February 3 at 1 p.m. on East Campus. Author and Professor, Walter L. Smith, Ph.D., presents "The Magnificent Twelve: Florida’s Black Junior Colleges" on Thursday, February 6 at 7 p.m. on East Campus. "History of African Dance & Drums," presented by the Kuumba Dancers & Drummers, will be Wednesday, February 12 at 12:40 p.m. on West Campus. Soul Food Dinner prepared by Steph’s Southern Soul Restaurant will be held Wednesday, February 26 at 6 p.m. on East Campus. Friday, February 28 at 12 p.m. on West Campus, Imani Asukile will facilitate "Revisiting Social Relevance of Soul Train."

Additionally, photo exhibitions will run throughout February. Lewis Plantation and Turpentine Still will be displayed from February 1 through 28 on the North and Spring Hill campuses. African American Southern Agrarian Life will be shown from February 1 through 28 on the East Campus and from February 14 through 28 on the West Campus.

These presentations are offered at no charge and the public is invited to attend. Schools and organizations are welcome. The schedule of activities, times, dates and locations can be found on the PHSC event calendar at www.phsc.edu/calendar.
