Medical Administrative Specialist—Technical Certificate
Medical administrative specialists perform clerical and office management duties. In addition to office skills, medical administrative specialists must possess knowledge and capabilities unique to the medical field. Understanding medical terminology helps administrative specialists communicate effectively with patients, medical suppliers and insurance agencies. Procedures for recordkeeping, filing and billing are different than other administrative fields. Medical administrative specialists often double as examining room assistants—checking patient vital signs, assisting physicians with exams and even assisting with minor medical procedures.
An effective medical administrative specialist is friendly and enjoys working with people. Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask are essential.
The purpose of this program is to prepare students for employment as medical secretaries in medical facilities and as examining room assistants in physicians’ offices. The program includes instruction in both general office and medical recordkeeping skills.
Students who complete this program are eligible to sit for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) certification examination, which is administered at Pasco-Hernando State College.
This program can be completed in approximately 18 months if students attend classes on a full-time basis.
This program can be completed on the East Campus in Dade City, North Campus in Brooksville and West Campus in New Port Richey.
Courses and clinical components are part of the program curriculum.
