Surgical Technology―Technical Certificate

Surgical technologists play a vital role in presurgical preparation, operating room assistance and other medical facility procedures. Technologists may set up instruments, supplies and equipment; prepare and transport patients; monitor vital signs; pass instruments and supplies to the surgical team; and procure and process lab specimens. Besides the operating room, surgical technologists are utilized in surgery centers, ERs, delivery rooms and ambulatory care areas.

Successful surgical technologists have strong listening, critical thinking and communication skills. They are coordinated, have good eyesight and a keen ability to foresee problems.

The purpose of this program is to prepare students to work as surgical technologists in hospital operating rooms, outpatient surgical centers, labor and delivery units, physician's offices and medical sales positions. Upon successful completion of the program, students are qualified to take a National Certifying Examination to become a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).

This program can be completed in less than two years if students attend classes on a full-time basis.

Courses and clinical components are part of the curriculum.
