Pasco-Hernando State College Athletic Director Steve Winterling has named Deann Newton as the head volleyball coach for the Bobcats. Newton will replace longtime coach Kim Whitney, who resigned to take a position at Calvary Christian High School in Clearwater.

Newton served as Whitney’s assistant coach helping the Bobcats to a seventh place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament this past season. Prior to coming to PHSC, Newton was the head varsity coach at Sunlake High School in Land O' Lakes, Fla. She led the Seahawks to 76-38 record during her four-year tenure.

Newton was a two-sport collegiate athlete at Western Oregon University playing both volleyball and softball. The nationally ranked WOU volleyball team played in the NAIA National Tournament in 1996 and 1997, where Newton was a right-side hitter.

“We are excited to have Deann as the new head coach,” Winterling says.  “She gained valuable experience working with Coach Whitney and she knows what it takes to keep our volleyball program at the national level.”

The volleyball team will start fall practice August 1, 2018.  For more information on the PHSC athletics program, visit
