SLR Theme 2024
Welcome to our annual Student Life Retreat! Each year, we embark on a journey of growth, inspiration and empowerment. This year's theme is a unique blend of the timeless wisdom of Dr. Seuss and the dynamic principles of the Fish! Philosophy, both of which offer invaluable lessons for leaders.
Background Information
Dr. Seuss, born Theodor Seuss Geisel, was more than a beloved children's author; he was a beacon of political advocacy and social change. Throughout his career, he used his creative talents to address significant social and political issues. During World War II, he created numerous political cartoons that criticized isolationism, fascism, and racism, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to social justice and human rights. His books often carried deeper messages about equality, environmentalism, and the dangers of prejudice. For instance, "The Lorax" is a poignant tale about environmental conservation, while "The Sneetches" addresses the absurdity of discrimination based on physical appearance. Dr. Seuss's ability to weave profound messages into whimsical stories has left a lasting impact, inspiring readers of all ages to think critically about the world and advocate for positive change.
As we reflect on his legacy, we can see the principles of the Fish! Philosophy shines through. The first principle, "Be There," reminds us of Dr. Seuss’s dedication to engage with societal issues through his art and stories. He showed us that being present and involved in meaningful conversations is crucial. The principle of "Make Their Day" is evident in the way his works continue to touch lives and inspire action, encouraging us to care deeply about the world around us. "Choose Your Attitude" is a theme that resonates throughout Dr. Seuss's stories, promoting positivity and resilience. Whether through the persistence of his characters or the uplifting messages within his narratives, Dr. Seuss taught us that our attitude can shape our reality. Lastly, he exemplified "Have Fun" by using humor and whimsy to address serious subjects, proving that joy and meaning can coexist. This blend of fun and significance invites us to find joy in our advocacy and leadership journeys.
