Pasco-Hernando State College (PHSC) proudly announced the transition of its Surgical Technology program from a certificate program to a full associate in science (AS) degree program last academic year, with the first class starting in spring 2025. This advancement reflects PHSC’s continued commitment to meeting industry standards and preparing students for in-demand careers in health care.
“The move to an AS degree ensures PHSC students receive a more comprehensive education that better supports their long-term success in the surgical technology field,” said Eric Hall, Ed.D., PHSC president. “PHSC is proud to reflect the evolving expectations of employers and accrediting bodies within the health care industry, ultimately benefiting our students.”
The decision to move the Surgical Technology program to an AS degree program aligns with national trends in surgical technology education, where associate degrees are becoming the standard entry point for the profession. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of surgical technologists is projected to grow faster than the average over the next decade, driven by advances in medical technology and increased surgical procedures.
The program currently supports several students actively pursuing their AS degree in Surgical Technology. In response to growing interest and increasing demand, PHSC is planning to expand the program to accommodate more students in future cohorts. The next cohort is scheduled to begin in August 2026, for an annual fall admission, with applications closing on March 30, 2026.
The program combines classroom instruction, lab simulation and hands-on clinical experiences in local hospitals and surgical centers. Students are prepared to assist in surgical procedures as vital members of the operating room team.
“PHSC’s transition of the Surgical Technology program to an associate degree better prepares our graduates to meet our regional workforce needs and enhances educational opportunities for students,” said Billie Gabbard, Ed.D., Dean of Nursing and Health Programs.
