What's Your Next Move?

Middle and high school students are invited to PHSC’s Chess Camp at the North Campus! Students will explore how to enhance their critical cognitive abilities, including problem-solving skills, improving memory, fostering creativity, boosting academic performance and developing spatial awareness. Reap the benefits of chess and start thinking about your next move!

Schedule

A daily snack break will be at 10 a.m., followed by a lunch break at noon.

Day One: Tuesday, July 7, 2026

  1. Introduction and reviewing the planned agenda.
  2. Discuss basic chess skills beyond piece movement, which will include mating strategies, forks, skewers, pins and pawn structure.
  3. Work through chess puzzles together.
  4. Participate in practice games among participants.

 

Day Two: Thursday, July 9, 2026

  1. Depending on the number of players, we will have a practice game.
  2. Participate in a Round-Robin Tournament (each player will play against all other players twice, once as white and once as black). This tournament will be the main focus of day two.
  3. A short awards ceremony will be held for the top players.

Instructors

  • Jason Wetherington, Professor, Mathematics
  • PHSC’s Caring Campus Team will attend for support.

Requirements

Must bring a bagged lunch and a refillable water bottle.

Camp Fee

The camp fee is $20 per camper. This non-refundable fee covers a camp T-shirt, trophies and snacks.

Grade Requirement

Students entering grades 6 through 12.
