Q&A with Megan McGee
Student veteran, Megan McGee, is turning her passion for drones into a career through PHSC’s Unmanned Vehicles Systems Operation (UVSO) program. After earning a degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), McGee came to PHSC to pursue specialized training in drone technology. In this Q&A, McGee shares her educational journey, her experiences in the UVSO program and her advice for students considering a future in drone technology.
Q: Why did you decide to enroll at PHSC?
McGee: I chose PHSC because it was close to where I was living at the time, but also because it had the drone program. I originally attended PHSC before transferring to USF to earn my degree in Geographic Information Systems, then I came back to get experience in the UVSO program.
Q: How has being a veteran shaped your journey?
McGee: Being a veteran has shaped my journey, as it has helped me find passion for what I do. My time in the military introduced me to many different career opportunities. After leaving the service, the benefits I received helped me pursue the career I wanted.
Q: What made you interested in the UVSO program?
McGee: What made me join the UVSO program was my interest in drones. I've always thought drones were really cool, and learning about all the ways they're used in today's world made them even more interesting to me. I figured the program would be a great opportunity to learn more and gain hands-on experience.
Q: What has been your favorite experience in the program?
McGee: My favorite experience in the program so far has been Drone Safety Day. It gave us the opportunity to showcase the skills we've learned while also providing valuable hands-on experience. Getting to apply what we've learned in a real-world setting gave me a better idea of what a career in the drone industry could be like, which made the experience even more exciting.
Q: How has this program contributed to your educational growth?
McGee: I've always enjoyed learning new things, and this program has helped me grow by providing hands-on learning opportunities. I'm an old-school learner who prefers learning by doing, and that has always been the best way for me to understand new skills. The hands-on experience made the program more engaging and enjoyable.
Q: Are there any instructors or staff you would like to recognize?
McGee: I would like to recognize Professor Megan Kostelnik for her passion for the drone industry. Her love for drones is evident every day, and it has made me even more excited about pursuing a career in this field. She has been an inspiring instructor and I appreciate the knowledge and encouragement she brings to the program.
Q: When do you expect to graduate?
McGee: I expect to graduate in the Fall of 2027.
Q: What are your plans after graduating?
McGee: After graduating, I’ll probably end up moving states while looking for jobs that can utilize my drone skills. I would love to use my degree for wildlife conservation and human evolvement in natural ecosystems.
Q: What advice would you give to a student thinking of enrolling?
McGee: I would say go for it! If you even have a slight interest in drones, give it a shot. With the program being so hands on, you end up learning a lot more than people realize!
