Daniel Powell, DM, has been chosen to serve as Vice President of Academic Affairs and Chief Academic Officer for Pasco-Hernando State College beginning early June.

"I am so excited to join the PHSC team because of its reputation as a high-quality, student-centered institution that is deeply committed to serving the needs of the almost 800,000 residents in Pasco and Hernando Counties. Serving in one of the fastest growing areas of the state in a supportive environment provides limitless opportunities for an awesome future that I look forward to co-creating with the dedicated, hard-working team at PHSC,” said Powell.

Powell most recently served as the vice president of academic success at Northwest Vista College since 2019 where during his tenure the college was recognized nationally for its high-quality instruction and academic support. Before joining NVC, Powell was dean of the school of arts & humanities at Laramie County Community College and served as the music and theater chair at the Patel Conservatory in the Straz Center for the Performing Arts in Tampa, Fla. Powell began his teaching career at Chipola College where he taught for seven years and was promoted to associate dean of fine and performing arts. Powell holds a Doctor of Music degree from Florida State University, a Master of Music degree from Arizona State University, a Bachelor of Music Education degree from West Texas A&M University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Troy University. In his spare time he likes to enjoy all of the fine and performing arts, hiking, and spending quality time with his daughter, Catherine, and their two cats Calypso and Crystal.

The vice president of academic affairs and chief academic officer role is critical to higher education institutions and primarily entails coordinating the development and implementation of all academic programs, ensuring compliance with accreditation standards and state and federal guidelines. Powell’s selection was one of the first major decisions of PHSCs new president Jesse Pisors, Ed.D.

“I am pleased to announce that Dr. Daniel Powell will be joining Pasco-Hernando State College as our next vice president of academic affairs and chief academic officer. Dr. Powell brings a wealth of both instructional and academic leadership experience and we are looking forward to having him part of the PHSC community,” said Pisors.

Powell will inherit the role from Gerene Thompson, Ph.D., Assistant Vice President and Dean of Arts and Sciences, who is serving as interim CAO after Stanley M. Giannet, Ph.D., retired in January with more than 31 years of service to PHSC.
