What is the CARES Act Student Emergency Funds grant program?

Under the federal CARES Act, the Higher Education Emergency Funds program provides funds to colleges and universities to award emergency financial aid grants to students who experienced a financial hardship as a result of disruption due to COVID-19.

Expenses Considered for Emergency Grant Funds

The following is a list of expenses that can be considered for emergency grant funds if they were incurred in direct relation to the disruption of campus operations due COVID-19.

  • Housing
  • Food
  • Child Care
  • Technology (assistance with Wi-Fi access or purchasing computer hardware or software)
  • Course materials

The emergency grant funds are not intended to be used to replace a loss of income or to pay for student expenses that are not directly related to the disruption of campus operations due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for CARES Act student emergency grant funds, students must complete the PHSC CARES Act grant request application, have been enrolled in the spring 2020 semester, have a valid 2019-2020 FAFSA on file, and have experienced a COVID-19 related financial hardship due to campus disruption. 

PHSC CARES Act grant funds will be awarded to eligible students on a first come-first serve basis with a one-time grant payment.

Students who are enrolled in an exclusive online program are not eligible for the CARES Act emergency financial aid grant.

Once a student applies for CARES Act Student Emergency Funds:

Students will see the CARES Act grant received message on their WISE account and will see the funds on their BankMobile account once they are disbursed to the student. Students will receive a confirmation email for their application.

Please, be sure you have completed a 2019-2020 FAFSA to remain eligible for CARES Act Student Emergency Funds.

The CARES Act Grant request form provides students with a self-identifying method to report eligible financial expenses the student has experienced as a result of COVID-19 and campus disruption. The CARES Act Grant request form provides the student with grant eligibility criteria and options to return the form to the Financial Aid Office for processing. CARES Act grant funds are awarded to students in the amounts of $3,000 (special groups), $1,000, $750, or $650 depending upon student eligibility and enrollment.

CARES Act Grant fund student awards were approved by a PHSC institutional committee which included the President’s Administrative Leadership Team. PHSC students have been provided with CARES Act Grant instruction, directions, and guidance through the institution’s website, students' emails, and social media communication.
